If you have recently opened a new restaurant or you are looking to revamp an existing restaurant, thinking about a seating plan / layout can be daunting. There are a lot of things to consider, but fear not, we are here to help you.

How many guests do you want to accommodate?

There are a few ways you can calculate this. A seated person takes up about 70cm squared (roughly), and this will include space for the seat tucked in with the person seated. Following this, you then need to think about your clientele i.e. do people come and dine as couples, families, alone? This will help you determine the size of restaurant tables you will need

Where are the walkways?

Think about walkways – your staff will need to easily get to their most frequently visited places with ease; the entrance and exit of the kitchen, the entrance to the restaurant and not forgetting the till and bar area. Clear walkways should be kept obstacle free, so think consider chairs when they are not tucked in – are they an obstacle? If so, plan for a little more space. Can customers get to any seat without having to ask other diners to move?

Are you utilising walls?

Walls are a great way of maximising seating and this is where fixed seating really comes into its element. You don’t need to worry about walkways as banquette seating will go all the way across the wall. A lot of restaurants opt for this as if gives you a lot of flexibility. The wall can cater for large tables, small and medium, depending upon the number of none-fixed chairs you have.

Customers don’t like wobbly tables

This is true and we can all relate to it if we go and eat somewhere. Thankfully though there is a solution; FLAT Technologies self-levelling table bases. This is a clever piece of kit which will self level tables, even when you join them together. It’s a much neater look than seeing napkins folded up and stuffed under a table leg to prop it up!
